Question:

How much RAM can a computer hold?

I'm currently upgrading my very old desktop computer in as many areas as I can so I can use it as a home computer instead of my laptop, I'm unsure what the maximum amount of RAM it can have is. Two of my friends who both know more about computers than me have both told me different things and I'm really confused. One said it can hold 1024MB Ram maximum and the other said it had a capacity of 2048MB RAM. The name of my computer is Packard Bell iMedia 5067 (SDRAM 2001)

Who is right?

I want to install as much RAM as I can.

Thanks for your help.

  1. Follow Dr. Hofmann!!! >>> http://www.crucial.com

  2. Follow this link.

    2048 is the right answer.

  3. mines can hold only 512mb

  4. You need to go the the packard bell web site and look up your model.

  5. According to this website the maximum amount you can get for your computer is 1.5GB of ram.  Here is the website:

    http://www.memorystock.com/memory/Packar...

  6. Look for the number of slots and find the maximum memory supported by one slot. I am attaching the link for your computer model. So go through the entire thing and find relevant details about your model.

  7. If you still have the instruction manual for your pc it will tell you exactly how much RAM your PC can take.

  8. three factors affect the maximum amount of RAM a computer can have or use

    1) the processor type (if its a 32 bit OS you are limted to nomore than 3Gb, 64 bit processors 6 exabytes... no idea what that is but its a heck of a lot)

    2) the motherboard (the maximum speed of the motherboard can dictate what type of memory you can fit, as also the number of slots (memory is added as mini PCB's called memory modules. some motehrboards have 1 slot, some two, some 4, some more

    3) the types of memory modules available for that specific speed type.

Ive seen DRAM memory mdoules in excess of 8 Gb, on some big server motherboards over 4 slots.. so thats potentially 32Gb available to a 64 bit processor and OS.

I'd expect your computer to have an effective maximum of 3gb... its almost certainly a 32 bit procesor and OS. so it comes down to finding out how many slots there are on the motherboard, and what the mother board can support. I'd expect it to be 2Gb. if you take out he existing memory module it shoudl say on it what type of memory it is (often PC3200 or DDR II or similar)

  9. 2048 is the max for your motherboard

You need 2 one gig sticks to max it out

    # Standard Memory:   256MB removable

    # Maximum Memory:   2048MB

    # Slots:   2 (2 banks of 1)

    # USB Support:   2.x Compliant

  10. Use the crucial scanner:

  11. the most you need is 2048mb ram = 2gb ram.

now days that is the standard.

although 1gb will get you by

  12. Do this scan http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ it will tell you all you need to know

  13. It depends on your motherboard version. Some older motherboards and BIOS's can only support 1 GB where the new ones support much more than that.

The best way to find out for sure would be to take the computer into the store and ask one of the techs to check the motherboard and find out how much it can hold for sure.
