From coins.about.com, an average condition (used) 1944 penny is 3 to 4 cents (depending on mint mark).

That's what a dealer may pay YOU, not what you'll pay.

If uncirculated or very good, then maybe 5-10x more.

And, with copper prices up so much, the value of the copper in an older all-copper penny is around 3 cents (from the same site, but I can't find a date of the article).

So if you need to make a million bucks, well you'll need more than 30 million of the buggers.
