  1. The last time I travelled to Manchester to see family it was fifty pound return.I think it has gone up a little more now.

  2. The key is to book in advance for travel on a certain train, preferably outside of peak periods like first thing in the morning, early evening or on Fridays.

The Trainline is good for timetables, but they have introduced a series of ridiculous charges so it now costs extra for them to post tickets, if you use a credit card, etc so I have abandoned them after using the site for years.

Instead,  I now use http://www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com. Train operators are obligated to sell you tickets for any route, even though this particular journey is on Virgin Trains. What I like about this particular website is that it quickly shows you when the cheapest tickets can be found each day. Plus they post the tickets to you free of charge.

As mentioned above, you can try the mobitix link for bargain offers. The 'catch' is that you print them off yourself, so you need access to a printer so that the barcode is clear. Also, at the moment the offer is only good for bookings till the end of June (although Virgin has been extending the offer on a month by month basis since introducing it in December). At the moment there a few £7 and £9 singles, but only on a few dates until the end of this month.

All of the cheapest tickets require you to travel on the train you have booked - it is only valid for that journey! You will not be refunded for missing a train and would have to buy a full price ticket.

  3. It totally depends, can cost from £9 - £100+ go to www.trainline.co.uk to check your dates, the further in advance the cheaper, if you have a printer you can get them cheaper by going here http://www.mobitix.thetrainline.com/vt/a...  but only for selected routes.

  4. You're better off flying.  I went from Manchester to London for a job interview once, and Virgin rail wanted over 120 pounds, so I booked on a BA flight and paid 79 return.  BA fed me sandwiches and gave me free alcohol too, which would have set me back an extra 15-20 on board the train.
