I am 21 years old. I have drank about 10 times in my entire life....A few times I had blackouts.

Some people have told me that I have brain damage from drinking (my Aunt that is in AA.)

Could I really get brain damage from drinking 10 times? I haven't drank in over a year because I don't want to risk getting brain damage.

Also, how can I make my brain healthier?

  1. Rest is important for healthy brain function.

During sleep, the body rebuilds it's self included the brain.

You can also improve the health of your brain by improving  overall physical health. Exercise is healthy and helps our minds to deal with things like stress, depression, ect.

Alcohole is a depressant, meaning it leaves you feeling depressed. It also puts stress apon your physical body because alcohole is literally a posion.

  3. Ok....any drug, alcohol included does cause some damage to the brain. Although unless you've had alcohol poisoning (and you would know if you had-hospitalization is a key indicator), which had induced a comma from one of the 10 times you've drinken, then NO, you do not have the medical standard of brain damage. But, if you were to continue drinking heavily, then you can either overdose-which is when respitory failure occurs because alcohol restricts the amount of oxygen allowed into the brain-or brain damage can occur in long-time, heavy drinkers. some symptoms are: difficulty swallowing, impaired problem solving, confusion, impaired coordination while walking, and abnormal eye movement. All of these syptoms are applicable when NOT under the influence of alcohol OR drugs. If you want, try to find the book, Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior-11th edition by Charles Ksir, Carl L. Hart, and Oakley Ray. It's very informative about all types of drugs and their effects. Oh, and some people black out and some don't, it doesn't mean you have brain damage, but it does mean you should be more careful about how much you drink and with whome you drink.
