  1. Every Olympics have their own medal designs and total weight may vary. There are certain requirements involved.... each Olympic medal must be at least 68mm across and 3mm thick. The gold medals must contain at least 92.5% silver, and at least 6 grams of 24-carat gold must coat each gold medal.


  2. Working backwards from news about the monetary value of a gold medal, 2008 gold medals would weigh about 130 grams, with 6 grams of the weight being gold. The rest is silver.

    The news article estimated $60 of silver. The price varies, but that's about 4 troy ounces -- which I think is about 124 grams. (32.15 troy ounces= 1 kg)

    You would also need to add some amount for the bit of jade on each 2008 medal.
