Question:

How much are braces for teeth in Australia?

I've just found out that my son will need braces to correct his teeth which are coming in very crooked and am going to organise an Orthodontist appointment for him.

I've tried looking on the net for prices of braces and I've found that the general cost is between $5000 and $8000 Aus.

Is this information right? Because the cost seems to be very steep.

I'm not currently in a private health fund.

  1. your about right with the costs however the most expensive i have heard is around $6500 - 7000.

If your son doesn't need braces for a year or two then you could do 2 things

    1. save money for the braces instead of getting health insurance

    2. get health insurance. but pick the right one, some insurance do not cover for ortho treatment, or only cover little so you end up paying most of the costs anyway. Also some health insurance dont pay for 'extras' such as headgears, retainers etc.

so do alot of research! and ask alot of questions! there will be a couple of health insurance that will help with braces.

And ask of waiting time. Some insurances make you wait for a year sometimes 2, till they will cover you, which is bull**** if you ask me.

    But save up money anyway!

Most orthodontists have payment plans (yay!), as they understand how expensive the procedure is and they are happy to pay off the braces in your own time.

Even ask your orthodontist or receptionist which health fund they think would be best. Generally the recpetionist can put you in the right direction.

  2. Yeah this is about right. Most orthodontists offer a scheme to pay it off gradually each of which can be claimed by rebate (at least that is how it was for mine). This also tends to cover all appointments and for me it covers every checkup after the braces were removed. Including x-rays. it seems a bit steep at first but most orthodontist are very good about it and understand that. Also it is a very worthwhile experience and can be very confidence boosting

  3. alot alot alot of money

  4. my sis got then a couple of years ago for about 5k

  5. Yeah....you won't get much change out of 5 to 8 grand.

Orthodontist appointments aren't performed at a "One Stop Shop".  They are regular visits to check on progress, adjustments to braces and possible re-sizing of braces.

My son had braces fitted to his top teeth about 15 years ago and it was roughly $3,500 back in those days.

You'd better join a Health Fund asap but beware...there may very well be a 'waiting period' before you can lodge a claim.

I'm an Aussie too.....G'day and good luck
