~~Every city is different, but in California you pay and the fees vary by what your business  is (can be a flat fee or by your gross income or estimated gross receipts). They are renewed yearly. Some cities let you do 6 months at a time (like a contractor has to purchase a license to work in it, bit they would not necessarily want it permanently. Call your city, they will tell you how to obtain the application (they are very easy to fill out) and give you costs details.
