  1. upfront costs (generally):

    chinchilla: 200-300 dollars

    Cage: 50-200 dollars

    Food: 20 dollars

    bedding :20 dollars

    toys: 20 dollars

vet care can run into the thousands because a chinchilla is considered an exotic and not just any vet treats exotic animals. chinchillas need special care and are not an easy pet! make sure you research very carefully before buying a chinchilla

  2. Depending on where you purchase a chinchilla, you're looking at $75-$400. If you're getting one from a pet store (which I really don't suggest, but its completely your preference), you'll probably spend $100-$200 on a standard grey, $200 plus on other colors. Usually pet store quality isn't that best, and you don't get papers with them to figure out if they have hereditary problems such as maloclusion or fur,  chewing issues. Breeders have different prices also depending on the quality and color of the fur. Standard greys can be $75-150, up to $400+ for violets, sapphires. If you want show quality chins, look at paying $2000+ - especially for angoras.

You can find cages starting at $75 going up to $300+. You can get a chinchilla starter kit from Petsmart that has a three story cage, a water bottle, a food bowl, chin food, litter/bedding, a chinchilla toy and even hay. Its good for a beginner, but its better to upgrade. If you're serious about chins, you may want to look into Quality Cage Company. They make cages that are perfect for chins, but they aren't cheap.

You're going to need to purchase a good quality food. I recommend Mazuri, Tradition, or Oxbow. You don't want to purchase foods that are full of treats, the chins will dig through their food just for the treats and will not eat the nutritious food. If you find a mill, you can probably get a 50 lb bag of Tradition for less than $20 - which is cost efficient.

Chinchillas also need lots of hay with their feed. It doesn't last long and can be somewhat costly. You need to find them quality bedding also. You can't use cedar and shouldn't use pine. I recommend Carefresh, which is recycled tree pulp and it isn't harmful to them. You'll look at $10 a month for hay and maybe $20 for bedding, which needs to be cleaned once or twice a week AT LEAST.

You need to purchase a dust bath and dust for them to take a bath in. They can not be bathed in water, so the dust cleans their fur for them. I recommend Blue Cloud Dust - but its not cheap either - 5 lbs is $20 or so. Dust needs to be cleaned out daily because they p**p in it.

Chins need lots of toys to chew on - especially wood. It can not be treated wood either. Levels, shelves, or ledges made of wood (that isnt treated wood) are great for them also.

Look into purchasing some sort of wheel. Chinchillas need lots of time outside of the cage, but when they can't get out of the cage, you need to have something for them to run on. Look at $30+ for quality chinchilla wheels.

Vet bills are not cheap at all either - you need to find a special vet for them. Most of the vets in my area have small experience with chins, but not enough to know what to do when something actually goes wrong. You need to find a place that handles exotic pets. Per chinchilla, I'm looking at $300 for checkups, and $1000+ for serious issues.
