I heard from here a professor say that she would always be telling her students to get a job. Career counselors were telling us this on the first year of school but only then, and no help, just advice... I know what I should do, but I need help.We all have to be 1 network. My own network is weak, that's just how it is. I always try harder, as much as I know how.

  1. In my program, the professors are great about helping as long as you actively seek their connections. Once you initiate things, they'll give you constructive crits on your portfolio and try to help you figure out where might be best for you, even get you the connections you need in some top architecture firms!  It never hurts to ask a prof who knows you well or who you think would be helpful.

  3. It really depends on the professor/college staff. Some professors I've met don't really have much interest in their students, while others will go to great lengths to help you. However, there are numerous job sites (Monstertrak, CareerBuilder, etc.) that you can use to try to secure an internship. You have to be proactive and not just depend on anyone.

One way to build your networks is to attend career fairs and talk to company representatives about your interests. An easy way to build your network is to just talk to people you meet in everyday situations, like waiting in line, on a plane, etc. You never know what a little conversation will do.

  4. I have never been turned away from a professor if I actively seeked help from them. Don't expect a professor to help you if you sit back and expect them to do the work for you.
