I understand that it is based on size, clarity, etc. But how much worth is placed by advertisements and company’s?

The real cost of diamonds is basically determined by the mining cost, the cost of cutting, and added value by the process of trading the diamond (selling - wholsesale) plus the cost of selling at the jewellers level, taxes, import duties, financing cost.

The markups at retail level are similar to many other businesses.

Try to buy from a seller closer to the sources, a gemdealer who sells wholsesale and retail and you might get the best deal.
