How much would it cost to lay hardwood floors and then to finish them? If location affects price, the house is in Newtown, Connecticut. Thanks.

  1. Wood flooring actually varies in price greatly depending on the manufacturer, style and finish of the floor. If you're having it installed I would say you would start out looking in the $6/sf range (probably more in the Northeast where you are).

You can get an engineered wood floor a little cheaper, which baiscally is the same as a wood floor except the hidden portion fo the wood is made of cheaper material and the top is a real wood veneer.

  2. The price of hardwood floors varies by the type and quality of the wood used.

While there are many expensive brands, I found a very nice oak, 3/4 inch thick and baords about 2 1/2 inches wide, that was prefinished at Menard's for $2.50 a squarefoot. We installed them ourselves - VERY EASY - and a year later they still look great and we get compliments all the time.

Your best bet it to shop around at various times a year and find the best deal for you in the style of wood flooring you like best. It does pay off in the long run to shop around during the year as prices fluctuate and discounts help alot when ordering a lot of wood.

  3. I am thinking between $3-6/square foot.  I would definetly get several estimates.  Wood should be within pennies, the finished products as well, the only variables are the labor and your gut feeling.  good luck.
