  1. Usually cheaper in Berlin than in München; one15m ZKB (that is, 15 square meters room, kitchen [niche], bath [usually shower]) goes for around 180 to 200 in Berlin, and on from 250 or 300 in Munich. Euros, that is, no expenses paid, like electricity and such. And you'll be stunned by the prices we have. Get your car a fill at the gas station? Think it over. The prices may seem reasonable, but they're per LITER, not per gallon.

  2. According to the ARGE Berlin one-bedroom appartments go for 350-400 EUR in Berlin This is the low end of the price range and you'll have a very very hard time finding anything cheaper. This is all cost included except electricity. This would correspondent to the rent of 200 EUR without expenses that Alwin E mentioned.

If you want to find out how much rents are in a city you need to ask what the social welfare department (ARGE) consideres "reasonable rent" for somebody on social welfare benefits in that city. This is usually the lowest possible rent you can find. For Berlin this was 350 EUR in May 2006 (all expenses included without electricity). Since then rents have risen considerably. I haven't got any new figures but I think just under 400 EUR is realistic for Berlin. For electricity you'll need to pay another 20-30 EUR per month.

A room in a shared appartment in Berlin would be around 180-250 EUR, electricity included.

http://www.wg-gesucht.de is a site where people offer rooms in shared appartments.

After looking a bit on the net, I found figures published by the ARGE Munich in 2005. According to these the basic rent (without expenses like water, heating etc.) for a one-bedroom appartment in Munich is around 400 EUR. So I think that the rent in Munich including water and heating but without electricity is bound to be around 500 EUR.

Based on the same figures a room in a shared flat will rent for around 400 EUR in Munich, all expenses included.
