  1. In 2002 I bought tickets from Venice to Rome (train went through Florence). The tickets on-line were $100 (same price today; 2nd class to Florence is $57) and I had a feeling that that was a rip off. We were staying in Venice for a couple days so I thought I'd check things out and if worst came to worst, I'd buy tickets at the train station.

    In Venice, near St. Marks Square is an American Express office. We bought our tickets there for half price. They only take cash or American Express.

    My advice is, if you are going to be in Venice for a couple days check out the Amex office and buy them there (Venice -> Florence, Florence -> Rome). You can always buy them at the train station.

    If you want the peace of mind of having the tickets before hand, the price at rail europe is $57, but you'll also have to pay $18 for FedEx delivery. From Florence to Rome the price is $45 or $60 for the faster train.

  2. This is the site you need to know all the train fares!

    http://www.trenitalia.com/it/4f19b222631...

    now bear in mind that in italian venice is venezia (and you have to choose the station called "venezia santa lucia" abbreviated as "venezia s.l.") florence is firenze (you have to choose the station called firenze santa maria novella abbreviated as s.m.n.) and rome is roma (you have to choose the station called roma termini abbreviated as te.)

    Here you are aproximative fares divided by kind of train:

    Venezia - Firenze

    eurostar (faster and more beautiful train) 1st class 48,50€ 2nd class 32,30€

    intercity (slower and a bit less beautiful) 1st class 28.50€ 2nd class

    21.50€

    Firenze - Roma

    eurostar 1st class 51,30€ 2nd class 36,10€

    intercity 1st class 35,00€  2nd class 26,50€

    regional train (even slower, not so common, not so beautiful!) 1st class 24,25€ 2nd class 15,80€

    In the site you can also see other things:

    in the first page you can see them writing the required informations

    BIGLIETTI = tickets

    Da dove vuoi partire? = where do u want to leave from?

    Dove vuoi arrivare? = where do you want to arrive?

    Quando vuoi partire? = when do you want to leave?

    giorno = day

    mese  = month

    anno = year

    A che ora vuoi partire? = at what time do u want to leave?

    ora  = hour (remember we use the 24 hour system!!!!)

    min = abbreviation for minutes

    (this can be aproximative, they do not want to know the exact time you want to leave!)

    when you've written all this stuff click on invia and you'll see the available trains.

    Partenza  = at what time it leaves

    Arrivo = at what time it arrives

    Durata = how long it takes

    N° Treno = number of the train

    Categoria Treno   = kind of train (ex. ES means eurostar, you leave the mouse over it for a second and it will appear!)

    Info = information

    Acquista  = buy

    If you click on the figure under "acquista" it brings you to another page, ther you see the word "tariffa" in the list at its right choose "standard" and under it you'll see the fare!

    Hope you understood all this!
