Approximately 50 percent of the original Everglades has been lost to agriculture and urban development (about 2 million acres, or more than half the Everglades wetlands). .Most of the rest is now protected in a national park, national wildlife refuge, and water conservation areas. Today the area of the Everglades National Park consists of about 2.3 million acres.

A lot!  If you look on www.evergladesnow.org  it will show the depletion of the everglades of the last 50 years.  I am currently working on a construction project on the north side of the everglades.  We are building the worlds largest above ground reservoir which will be about 16,000 acres to be completed in 2010.  The purpose is to hold water from the rainy season and slowly release it into the everglades during the dry season, to conserve the habitat.  The above web site will explain in much better detail than I can.
