  1. Billions and billions of dollars.  The effort continues to this day.  They are still rebuilding down there   It will take years to accomplish rebuilding of the affected areas.

  2. Billions, but much of it went straight in the pockets of government officials. There are still people living in tents under bridges today. Most of us are working, but it is still not enough. Don't listen to those who say we are all just waiting for handouts, those people do not live here, do NOT know what the h**l they are talking about and are only judging an entire region by the two or three jerks they seen on TV.

  3. According to Wikipedia, the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund collected donations from the public for the relief effort, raising about one billion dollars in cash and pledges.

This is ten times more money than the next largest amount collected by a charity, the Salvation Army.

The Red Cross estimated that its response would cost some $2 billion of which $100 million was expected to be reimbursed by FEMA, while the rest would need to come from donations.

At President Bush's urging, the U.S. Senate quickly approved $10.5 billion in aid for victims September 1, 2005. The U.S. House of Representatives voted and approved on the measure Friday, September 2, 2005 without any debate. President Bush requested an additional $51.8 billion on September 7. Congress approved that funding package the next day.

Governor Mike Huckabee issued a proclamation releasing $75,000 of state funds to assist shelters in 14 southern and delta counties in Arkansas.

Here is some interesting information that I was not aware of about international donors. All the countries and international organizations listed pledged help, but the U.S. did not want to accept most of it - so that we would not be beholden to other nations later on!

  4. I can't give you an actual dollar amount (though it was in the billions), but I can say that it was NOT ENOUGH.

  5. Billions were given, but much of that money has been used inapporpriately by both the charities and by the bush admin, as well as local and state officials.

For example, when you give to the red cross or Habitat, that money was, at times, used to rebuild and for supplies, but was more often used by those orgs for their national and international efforts, as well as for overhead and advertizing. Other examples include not specifically designating your donation for katrina relief means that the money can go to the general fund or to any fund the org wishes....so while some money has been spent in Miss and New Orleans, much of it has gone unaccounted for or has been spent elsewhere....which is one reason why there are so many still living in asbestos filled trailers.

  6. i want to know also.
