Question:

How much bandwidth do I need to support 20 people?

I am trying to order a satellite internet setup for my Deploying unit. To make it affordable we have to share the connection, but the plans for sale only tell me how much bandwidth I'm getting. My options are 512 kbs, 1024, or 2048. Obviously, the bigger the better, but there are not small price differences in between. Any knowledge would be appreciated!

  1. For 20 people who's going to be using the connection most of the time... get the highest option possible....

  2. Honestly, all you need is the 1024.  Schools and business were and are still getting by on that speed for many, many years without any problems.  2048 is probably very expensive and unless you would be seriously comprising productivity, you will be more than O.K. with 1024.  :)

  3. It really depends on a few factors.  Most importantly are all 20 going to be using the system at the same time ?  If not look at what will be a typical number of users at the same time.  Second factor to look at is what types of application are you planning to use.  If it for Casual surfing, Blogging and E-mail then you do not need as much bandwidth as say users spending the whole day, download movies or streaming video.

With the Satellite, will they allow you to upgrade ?  If yes I would start at 1,024 and then move upwards if speed problems warrant it.

  4. i have an office of 35 people and a t1 line (1.54mbit both ways)

it works fine. Its not fast - but that might even help out as i dont need to worry about people trying to download c**p while at the office =)

    it works perfectly for business.

also the only thing we really use the internet for is research and email.

  5. For 20 people, you need the maximum amount of bandwidth possible. Go for the 2048mb.
