  1. You should never give any meds to a child without asking their Dr first.  The Dr can tell you the amount to give and when.

  2. First off...whoever is giving thumbs down seriously needs to grow up. It's ridiculous.

Second, all the advice listed is good advice. You should never give any amount of any medication without first checking with a doctor or pharmacist to a) make sure it's safe to even give, and b) to make sure that if it is safe they get the accurate dosage. Always always always better safe than sorry.

  3. that is the craziest thing i have heard in a long while!! unless y our doctor thinks that  your son needs benadryl for the medical reasons that it is used for...you are drugging your child and that is NOT right...in fact if family and child services knew about this your child might not remain in your custody until a full investigation is done..i would strongly recommend you re-think why you aer drugging your 1 year old!!!

  4. Hi there, I am unsure about Benadryl but I know that we used Nurofen for children whilst doing a long haul trip on a plane and it seemed to do the trick.

The dosage for that was 3-6 months 2-5ml 3 times max.

    And 6-12 months 2-5 mls 3-4 times.

    1-3 years 5 mls 3 times

    (Contains ibuprofen 100mg)

You could also get prescription paracetamol which is 2.5ml every 4 hours (contains 250mg)

If it is adult Benadryl I would probably be inclined to call a pharmacy or even your local GP might be able to advise you on correct dosage and just have the bottle handy because they might ask you about the active ingredients in it.

    Good luck with the flying

  5. You need to give him benadryl for a plane trip??  Are you trying to drug him??

You need to speak to your doctor about this....

  6. Call a pharmacist. They will always answer questions.

  7. Double check with his doctor first but

Give 0.5 mg per pound every 4-6 hours. (See dosing chart) The package doesn't give a dose for under 2 years of age and we don't recommend use under the age of one. The package also gives rather vague doses (one dose for a 2-6 year-old), often resulting in under-dosing. I prefer to calculate the dose by the child's weight. The dose is about 0.5 mg per pound of bodyweight (or 1.25 mg per kilogram). For example, a 25 lb child would get 12.5 mg (25lb X 0.5mg/lb = 12.5mg). This is exactly one teaspoon of liquid or one chewable tablet. This dose can be given every four to six hours. Hint: the dose for Benadryl and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) are the same for the liquid or chewables, i.e. if a child gets one teaspoon of Tylenol, then his dose of Benadryl is also one teaspoon.

\EDIT: Yes I completly agree with Yarro. Benadryl makes our son hyper not sleepy.

  8. Our pediatrician says that it's fine to give our daughter Benedryl to help calm her for plane trips. (Before everyone sits in judgement, she has a sensory integration disorder, and her behaviors would drive us and everyone else on the plane INSANE. We've done it without Benedryl many times, and we always try NOT to use it, but I'd never fly without the option, either.)

Anyway. We have a cheat sheet from our pediatrician's office for common medications.

You go by weight, not age. And for Benedryl, the correct dosage for a 23-pound child is 1 tsp.

One other note: if you're going to do this, try it well before you get on the plane. While Benedryl makes our kids sleepy and calm, it CAN have the complete opposite effect on other kids. And you don't want to be trapped on a plane with a kid who's completely bouncing off the walls. Do a "dress rehearsal" first.

  9. please call your doctor or pharmacist. You shouldn't ask that on here, you might get a wrong answer and hurt the baby.  Ask them if its OK and how much.  Have fun.
