  1. You will get much more with blu ray in terms of pic & sound quality, it doesn't matter that you dont have a surround set-up, you can always work towards that another time.

The Sony BDP-S350 is about $400.00 and its already gaining much acclaim for its outstanding quality. More players from various companies are expected in autumn.

And yes, blu ray is outstanding, Well worth the money for what you get. $400.00 is not a lot when you consider what your getting for your money.

  2. 1) Depends on the transfer.

    2) It may be worthwhile to wait just abit longer or get a PS3

    3) Most Blu-Ray player will play DVDs just note that some PS3 models are not backward compatible with PS2 or PS1 games anymore.

  3. Regular dvd's are good enough for me, but when blu-ray gets more popular and prices go down, I will buy one. Depends on how long you can wait or how much you want to spend. When there are as many blu-rays as dvd's, the cost should be considerably lower.

  4. BR plays and upconverts standard dvd's.  I don't think it's worth it - they're still overpriced for a few BR titles available - which the discs are also overpriced.  Upconverted dvd's look very close to BR quality.  The image is just as sharp, but slightly less accurate because computer logic is filling in the missing pixels based on surrounding pixel content.

  5. blu ray is better than regular dvd trust. watch the golden compass on blu ray and you swear you can step right in your tv

  6. Save yourself some money and get an upconverter, it will make all your dvds near HD quality, and cost about a quarter of a blueray player (which is still in progress at this point).  Bluray discs cost more too.  Unless you have a 52" 1080p or bigger, you won't need bluray anytime soon, wait for the price to drop.

  7. Blu Ray is far superior BUT it depends on your TV size and quality.  If you don't have an HDTV, forget it.

If you do have an HDTV, but it is less than 42", forget it.  Once you get into the larger HDTV's, you will really notice the difference in resolution.

  8. Blu-ray is like a million times better than DVD. The picture is just so real, that you would think you were already there. Blu ray players play DVDs flawlessly, so there is nothing to worry about. You don't need surround sound. The picture is just so nice, it compensates for the sound.

  9. Do you have HD channels you can watch? You also usually have standard def versions of ABC, CBS, NBC.

Wait until tonight when the good shows in HD are on. Start watching House, Bones, CSI:Miami, etc in standard def.

In the middle of the show (not during commercials) switch to the same station, but the high def version.

This will show you how much better BluRay is over Standard DVD on your TV.

If you think the improvement in the picture is dramatic or worth the money, start shopping for a BluRay player.

I am not a big fan of Sony or it's business practices, but the PS3 is one of the better BluRay players available.
