How much can I expect to be taken out of my paycheck for taxes at age 16?

Ok, here is my situation. I am 16 years old in Michigan, and I recently found a job. I have been working for almost 3 weeks, and I am getting my first paycheck on Wednesday. I worked a little over 60 hours over the 3 weeks, and I earned about $410. How much can I expect to take out for taxes? How much will I actually get in my check? And how much can I expect to get back at the end of the year?

I filed 0 on my tax form because I am a minor and my parents claim me.

  1. I think $350 would be a safe amount to plan on if you are getting paid for all 3 weeks.  If you get paid all of it anyway.  If you get paid once a month you should get it, but if you get paid twice a month there is a chance you may only get paid THIS paycheck for what you worked until the 15th (based on getting paid on 15th and 30th).  Make sense.

Going on what you have said above assuming that you are going to get paid for ALL that you have worked I personally would use $350 to work my budget.  That may be under guessing, but that is what I would figure just to be safe.  There really is no way to know.  Each job differs.

  2. Go here for some handy paycheck calculators:  http://www.paycheckcity.com

For a bi-weekly check in MI claiming 0 allowances, here's the expected breakout:

    Bi-weekly Gross Pay:  $410.00

    Federal Withholding:  $32.00

    Social Security:  $25.42

    Medicare:  $5.95

    Michigan:  $17.84

    Net Pay:  $328.79
