In the process of packing I came across this old game case that belonged to my gram pa. Its a solid oak case and inside is a full Ivory domino set a marble chess set with Ivory pieces and 4 Ivory dice. I'm giving it to my sister and just kind of wondering a value. I need to no if I can get insurance on them or am I wasting my time looking since Ivory I think is Illegal.

  1. Probably, a couple hundred dollars.

Because, like, ive bought ivory for $500 before.

  2. It has value to a collector, like myself. I'd think twice before giving it away.

  3. I don't think it's illegal unless you sell it. Anything made of ivory before a certain date is legal to keep if you already own it. Giving it to your sister shouldn't be a problem. Call an appraiser for information on insuring it. Better yet call three and match their opinions.

  4. It is not illegal to own it, since it is old, and it is already yours.  It would be different if you were buying it and trying to import it.  It may be worth quite a lot.  I would get it appraised.  I am sure you can get insurance on it if you want to.  Check on ebay and see if there is anything similar for sale and that might give you a quick idea, but as another poster mentioned, it is worth a lot  mostly to collectors.  In the end, anything is worth in $$$ only what someone will pay you for it.  But it is worth a great deal more because it was your grandpa's.
