Question:

How much can I negotiate on a used SUV?

I am going car shopping tomorrow and would like to look at some used SUVs, since prices are so low right now with gas prices. I found two that I really like one is $17k the other is $16k. There are probably 100 of these exact SUVs within the area and many of them have been sitting on the lots for months. How much do you think I can get them to come down on the price of these two vehicles? I am buying it outright with a check (cash) if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

  1. Dealers are probably dying to get the SUVs off their lots these days. I would say, research the SUV that you want and check out it's value with Kelly Blue Book http://www.kbb.com/

which is the site most dealers use. Then you know the true value of the truck. Also, the dealers are definitely not going to sell it to you for less than they purchased it for, so also research the trade in value. The difference between the two is the profit margin for the dealer. (ie: trade in value 8, 000 retail value 15,000 profit would be 7,000 -not an actual example just something off the top of my head- you might say $1,000 is a reasonable profit and buy it for $9,000) Negotiate with them from there.

(as an aside: with gas prices being what they are and still climbing I don't think it's a great idea to buy a gas guzzling SUV. I parked mine and drive the car now....)

  2. depends on how many miles is on it.

    and the year

but i dont see gas prices going down ....

  3. Wow I would think if you were in the market for a SUV now would be a time to buy, no one wants them. I would run them so low it would seam funny you are getting that price. Anyhow I recommend buying a newer version so you get at least some fuel quality standards out of the deal but I would think it would be a nice market for a SUV buyer. I think you might even get them down to 10 if you work the deal out just right but realistically I say  15k and 14k 2k under quoted price

  4. Take at least 2500 off or 20%,...and tell them you are not paying dealer prep! That is BS,....

  5. The dealers are probably desperate to get rid of them so just make really low offers and if they say you're being ridiculous, just say that's fine, I'll go somewhere else then. and watch them give you a counter offer before you even start to walk away.

  6. Id shoot em 12500....if they dont take it, say, I'll be back in a month when gas is $5 a gallon...I wouldnt be in any hurry unless you just have to have it now, they will get even cheaper
