  1. Some ""stupid think a shetland pony can carry 200 pounds Well he might But not for long ''

Now It all depend on the horse's built If he is small boned No

And also what do you want him for ?

so please tell us what you intend to do withis horse and what or how he is built so then I can you a good answer

But a 16.1 hand horse might be small frame and legs like a tooth picks so Please help us more so we can help you more

Personally I feel if a person can ride correct and have GREAT  balance, and know how to ride correctly   yes he would be able to carry 200.lbs But any thing heavier get a Draft horse , a horse that was made to carry  lots of weight ,,

I pity horse's that have a rider that weighs so much that he lies down Well I would to if I had to carry 300 lbs

  2. usually 20% of its body weight.

  3. From Equus magazine, a rule of thumb is no more than 20% of the horse's weight, assuming it is in good condition--not too fat or too thin.  So that means a 1000 pound horse shouldn't carry more than 200 pounds.  That's if the rider is competent.  A poor or inexperienced rider should be lighter.  Some people believe that 20% is still too much weight.  And a knowledgable person should check saddle fit and the condition of the horse's back, particularly if the rider is large/inexperienced.

  4. It depends on the build and breed of the horse.  A 16.1hh shire is going to be able to carry more weight than a 16.1hh Thoroughbred!
