Question:

How much can a therapist really help?

I've been feeling depressed and lost lately. I think I've been putting a lot of hope into the idea that once I go back to college in the fall you can go to a therapist/counselor for free. I don't want to sound whiny but I've just had a tough year and kind of want to tell my story to someone, maybe get some objective, outside opinions on what to do. I don't really want to talk to my family/friends because I don't want to burden them or tarnish my image. Sometimes I worry that I'm getting my hopes up too much.

  1. i know how you feel, i was getting so depressed a while ago, i was pushing away all my loved ones and i was thinking all these stupid things, but i went a therapist and it really helped me. you should consider it, i actually suggest you do it. another thing that helped me was keeping a journal. dont write in it every day, just when your not feeling well, and try to think positive. i think i want to go see a therapist soon too. keep your hopes up its going to work out just fine.

  2. Talk to them, they won't judge you. I'm on the student advisory committee for out counseling center, and our therapist are really nice. Take advantage of the services.

  3. The best thing about therapists is they never judge you, there are some great therapists out there who really care about you, i know mine did. When you talk out your feelings you really feel better after words. I think this a great idea...good luck!

  4. All you can do is go to one and see if it helps. It might or it might not. If you aren't seriously depressed then I'm sure you will find help somewhere.
