i'm getting married in may of '09 and am trying to lose some weight...what i am afraid of is if i lose weight and depending on how much i lose(which i'm hoping to be a couple of sizes) how much the dress can be taken in. see, the dress has already been ordered to a specific size and i actually think it may be too big to begin with. it also has a zipper back instead of a corset back. how much will that play a part in how far it can be sized in?

  1. Some dresses can be taken in several sizes depending on the style of the dress.  If the bodice of the dress has a lot of beading, embroidery or rouching (gathering) it probably won't be able to be taken in more than a few sizes without it looking very "off".  Some dresses can be taken in A LOT.  However, you have to make sure that you take the dress to a good seamstress with a very good reputation and be prepared to hand over some serious cash, as this involves major work.

  2. i don't know

  3. A lot . but it depends on the style dress you get.if its heavy beaded it can get tricky to keep the pattern.and get vary costly.but my dress was heavy beaded and orders in a 12 and got took down to a size 6 in the chest and 4 in the waist if that helps. but just make sure you have a vary good seamstress.good luck and congrats

  5. depends on the bead work and how good the person doing your alterations is.. but sometimes its up to 5 sizes.

  6. congradulations on your marriage...but do we look lik a bunch of tailors. lol i have no idea

  7. depending the the dress about 1-2 sizes fi the seamstress is really good.  but its easier to let it out then take it in!

  8. I work at a bridal store...it depends on the cut of the dress. If gathers on the side, not very much but if it doesn't, then you can take in a lot. The alterationist at the store I work at can make size 18's size 4's. Just get a good alterationist and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

  9. Fabric can be taken in sevral inches and darts or pleats added to take upmore. but its the letting out thats limited to

the seams and extra materials available. then thats the problems yo then have to add seams and fabrics.

    cheers

  10. a lot

  11. I have been told by tailors that specialize in wedding dresses that 2-4 sizes is about the maximum you want to take in. While you can do more on some dresses you often lose detailing, especially if there is beading.

It really depends on the dress.

  12. a zipper back will be harder and more complicated to take in than a lace up... i would suggest instead of paying for an alteration more than one size on a zipper back, make the same dress a lace up. if you get it altered and you still lose more weight a lace up has more room to play with.

you can get away with a size or two with a lace up. also if your taking it in more than two sizes ( depending on the dress, if it has lots of beading and complicated details) it will be expensive to take in with a zipper...

also look for discount dress shops where you live, they may know of a reasonable seamstress who does wedding dresses...

i had my dress taken in two sizes with lots of beading on it... it was a lace up!!!

  13. This really is a question for a bridal shop owner or seamstress, not random brides/bridal shop workers on the internet.

That being said, you're in luck. I own a rather large couture bridal salon. I've been in the business 16 years.

A good rule of thumb is no more than 3 sizes. With most designers, a "size" is equal to about 1" difference. 3 sizes is about 30lbs give or take.

Toss out the advice of making it a corset back. This "technique" is often used by less experienced seamstresses to make a too-small dress fit, not a too-big dress. First and foremost, there are MANY dresses that cannot be made into a corset back. They lack the internal structure to support the corseting. What you get is a dress with several ugly bulges in a cute little pattern on the tummy of the dress. Not appealing at all.

As for making  size 18 dress fit a size 4, well....I'm not going to even dignify that one with a response.

If you are getting married in May 09, ask the bridal shop to hold your order until November. Don't worry about discontinuation- that has already happened for the upcoming season. You're safe until March 09.

  14. It can only be taken in a few sizes. Don't lose too much weight!!  Or..just get another dress once the wedding is closer.

  15. I was told while wedding dress shopping that a dress can be taken in about 4 sizes which amounts to about 40 pounds of weight loss. Depending on the dress it could be taken in more though. With the zipper back I actually believe that gives them a little more lee way in taking in a dress. A corset usually covers a larger section of the back of the dress leaving less room to play with.

If you only plan on losing a couple of sizes you should be fine.
