  1. how big is it? I've pruned one of my acers in the front garden it was getting to widespread, i first of all pruned back this years growth then removed any crossing branches and deadwood then took a a bit more off I've reduced my acer disectum by about a foot to 18ins, it was about 4 and a half feet wide, remember to cut back to growing points otherwise you will end up with lots of unsightly stubs which will end up as deadwood only use a good set of bypass secateurs, anvil just crush on the cut.good luck . PS late spring i pruned mine, looks fine now

  2. In one year, you can safely prune away about 1/3 of your Acer palmatum.  Best done in the fall, however.
