I used to work part time earning about £65 a week. I had no deductions taken off. I was just told by my employer and his wife (who worked for tax office) that you dont have any deductions unless you earned over a certain amount each week and that i was earning under. Is this right? Ive heard it a few times. This was a few years ago, does anyone know the limit you can work for without deductions?? Any help is much appreciated!!

  1. Your personal allowance in 2008/9 is £5,435 which means you can earn up to £105 a week before you pay tax. This is also the limit for national insurance.

As a result of 10% tax rate controversy, by concession this rate is actually being increased by £600 for 2008/9 although the admin won't be put through until Sept. This means you can earn about £116 a week before paying tax but you will still pay national insurance on earnings over £105 p/w.

Remember the tax personal allowance is calculated annually though not weekly which can change things.

  2. Currently, you can earn £5,435 a year (or £104.52 per week) without paying tax or NI.

You can contact the IRS or your local tax office when yuo begin a new job, and obtain a correct tax code for your employer. Some employers may do this for you.
