I only have retail and food experience, but make about $8.00 an hour and that just doesn't cut it. How much could I earn in an office setting with no experience?

  1. $8 - $10 hr. More IF you have years of experience and/or specialized skills that are above the position. An example of this is an admin asst who also has the skills to double as an IT person when needed.

  2. Depends on what you do in the office and where you live but probably about the same if you have no experience or college degree.

  3. It can depend on how large or small the office is.  For general job/career info:  http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'receptionists and information clerks', 'administrative assistants and secretaries', 'file clerks' or such.

If wanting to get training for computer and office skills to perhaps increase one's marketability in the job force, perhaps look at the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course).  Please do note that there are Not supposed to be too many jobs for the medical biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ schools proclaim :)

Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, US career, stratford career, capella, university of phoenix, kaplan, devry, ITT tech, sanford brown, strayer, devry, keiser, walden, everest and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit':  http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us

http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

  4. If you could manage to pick up a class or two in Microsoft Office programs (such as Excel, Word, and the Outlook programs) You could land a job in an office.  Unfortunately the starting pay may not be more than you are making now.  I have seen Administrative Assistants without degrees, earn as much as 12 to 15 per hour, but this is only after years with the same company.  Your best bet is to pick up some kind of specialized training that is related to the medical field, such as Medical billing, Medical Assistant, or Pharmacy tech.  This is assuming you do not want to go back to school for a full 4 years.
