Question:

How much can you really take in to Brazil before being taxed?

I am flying to Brazil next month, and I understand that they have ridiculous import taxes, which can also apply to your baggage and carryons if they are of any value. For example, I am concerned that if I pack up 2 bags and a carry on with Abercrombie and Fitch, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, or similar types of clothing, I will be heavily taxed upon arrival. I understand through various websites that officially, you may take up to $500 worth of items in to Brazil. Is this strictly enforced? Hopefully someone out there regularly travels to Brazil and can answer my questions. Thanks!

  1. You will not have a problem bringing clearly used clothing with you.  If they have tags that could be another thing.  The customs guys do random searches, but I have traveled to Brazil probably 15 times over the past 5 years for work and never had a problem.  I always had gifts, donations, and my personal items - never had a problem.

The problem you will have is wearing the designer clothes in Rio.  Why would you want to bring all those clothes with you?  You are just asking to be singled out as a tourist - and one with money.  That is not a great idea traveling anywhere - and Brazil is no exception.

    Travel smart and have fun!

  2. Hi I Hope you´re not coming to Rio de Janeiro cause there´s a epidemy going on, and it´s called "dengue" and it´s transmitted by a mosquitto 57 people died so far and thousands are infected). But if you survive dengue, watch out stray bullets and muggers.

Forget about the rest and be happy

by the way , don´t you have another place to go?

  3. Hey! I'm Brazilian and always I go to Brazil they never charge me anything. Used clothes, used eletronics or anything else thats yours they wont charge anything. They will only charging the things you are bringing for GIFT or you are going to sell there!

Enjoy Brazil and have a great one!

  4. You will be taxed only if you are bringing these clothes to sell here.

If it is your clothes (used) there will be no problem.

Other things like: eletronics you can bring US 500.
