  1. When my son was 4 yr. old, he too didn't like drawing. But now that he's 6, he's starting to love drawing. The teacher teaches them during art class.. So, don't force your son, he'll have his time when he wants to and be ready when he wants to.

  2. Give him something he is interested in ,for example dinosaurs or trains get him to start off by just colouring in picture to practise his pencil control

then add his name at the bottom written in a highlighting pen  so he can trace over the letters with his pencil.

Please be patient with him if you fuss you could completely put him off. When he does attempt it praise him like no tomorrow.

  3. Meet him at his interest level.  I taught my son -when he was 4- to write his name in our backyard.  We made a mud puddle and spent all afternoon out there writing his name in the mud with a stick. We also practiced writing letters and numbers in shaving cream on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil (for easy clean up) and Popsicle sticks.  A lot of boys that age aren't interested in those kind of activities.

  4. Each child's ability to "draw" varies.  It also depends on natural ability, past experience---parents drawing, availabilty of matierals to explore with.  The website that I gave gives you a general idea of ages and stages.

My son pretty much did smiley faces on big bodies until these past few months and he is 5 yrs now.  Considering that they are still focused on themselves this is pretty normal.  He went from drawing himself to drawing his family and then houses and now he is drawing them all together to create a "story" and adding details like a zig zag from a lower door to a higher door for an "upstairs" and coloring one window in because the blinds are closed, he draws a sun and then adds rain and a rainbow because that is something that intrigues him right now.  I would say that his interest level has become higher only in these last few months...so closer to five years old.  Now his cousin how is about 6 months younger than him has been drawing recognizable tractors starting at about 3.5 yrs.  The difference here is his cousin's daddy does quite a bit representational drawings (specifically tractors) with him whereas I'm more into exploration and not that much of a drawer myself.  I wouldn't worry to much about representational drawings...that will come naturally when he is ready for it...but it would be great to have him describe or even you do a simple statement like..."look at this line...it's a zig zag!"  Take him to a children's art museum or check out some children's art books from the library and focus more with art appreciation than the actual drawing!
