How much cardio/weight a day?

So I am going to start exercising daily and I need to know how much cardio and/or weight lifting (training) I should do a day. I'm going to start exercising and dieting to help lose weight if that helps. Thanks. Also if you could recommend some things I should do for the weight training part. Like squats, lunges or whatever works best.

  1. do 20 minute of weight lifting a day, and pack in as much cardio as possible, at least an hour and a half

  2. Hi Lauren

My favourite sport as a youngster was karate. It takes in every aspect of physical training you could want and gives you a skill besides. My trainer used to say regardless of the martial aspects, "any exercise is better than none".

You're right to be thinking diet + training. Tailoring your program to your specific needs just requires a little research and common sense. Main thing is, build your exercise program slowly! Take time to develop your capacity or you might do more harm to your body than good. Start light and no more than 30-minutes to begin with.

Alternate your weight training with aerobic exercise. Do weights one day, take a long walk the next. Then combine to create a full hour. Build your weight repetitions gradually and after a couple of weeks walking, develop into a light run.

Naturally, you don't give your age! That's OK! But if you're 30+ its a good idea to have your doctor (GP) do a general physical check-up (which is a good idea once a year anyway) before you begin an exercise program. The doc may have some additional advice worth following.

On the diet side, there is also some reading and a link for a free download from Ken Dockins' weight loss book, which is very sound and practical!

Anyway, you could do worse than to check out the site and follow some links. You'll get some professional input even if you don't buy the products.

  3. it really depends on the shape you want to be in, most women aim for more cardio, at least half an hour a day. try to switch up the workout as well, as your muscles get used to repetitive activities like biking.  for weights just keep the weight relatively low, not too easy, but do a lot of reps.
