  1. Firstly, read this website on axolotl care:

    http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/amphibian...

Axolots can go for a week without food.  Just make very sure your water chemistry is ok before you go away, no old food is left in the tank, and check your filter and heater are working efficiently.

    Good luck, enjoy!

  2. You don't need to devote too many hours a week to caring for them, but you do need to make sure you keep up with your cleaning schedule, as they will die very quickly if you don't. I think the hardest thing about caring for axolotls is having to constantly keep an eye on the temperature and water chemistry. They are so much more sensitive than fish.

You shouldn't really leave axolotls for longer than a few days, a week at the most. They can safely go for three weeks without food, but it is very important to keep up with water changes. Is there a friend or neighbour that would do that for you?

If you are seriously considering getting one, the most important thing is to do your research first, and make sure you know absolutely everything about caring for them.

http://www.axolotl.org is the best website about them and will tell you everything you need to know. The site also has an excellent forum where you could post this question and get loads more responses, mostly from axolotl owners who know their stuff.

Also, in reply to the other answerer, you do not need a heater, as the colder they are the better.
