How much cash do you think I should bring on my cruise??

I'm leaving on a cruise in about a week with the family so I'm not really going to be paying for food and stuff like that but I obviously want to take complete advantage of the duty free shopping! I obviously don't want to go overboard, obviously being in college I don't have thousands to spend, but I would like to get a few things for myself (retail & local handicrafts & such) and a few things for my boyfriend (Definitely cigars..he loves them). How much cash would you suggest I bring? And should I bother bringing my debit/credit card or just take cash? Thanks!

  1. I would probably bring about $200 if you decide to dock and go shopping. that way you have cash on hand just in case if some places dont take credit. I would also bring a debit or credit card, just in case.

Hope you have fun on your cruise!

  2. I would agree with the $100 per port...that should be enough for souvenirs and stuff.   If you drink or smoke, add enough to stock up to your customs maximum in the duty free shop on board.

Don't take a credit card for port purchases (or, only take it for emergencies).  Any credit transactions in a foreign country will have charges tacked on, and horrible exchange rates, and credit card companies are notorious for NOT processing the charges until the exchange rate moves in their favor (they have up to 60 days to hold your charge).  If you don't want to carry cash, get travelers cheques.  Your dollars carry sufficient purchasing power most places, and exchange rates, if necessary, are way better.

  3. Count how many ports you will be going to and take about $100 for each port. Myself, I prefer to use a debit or credit card for my purchases. Then you don't have to carry much cash around. Also in foreign ports, a credit card will automatically convert your money for you from foreign money to American money. Be careful on your cigar purchases, like Cuban cigars. You can do it, but you should remove the labels from them to be on the safe side.

  4. Take a credit card and a couple hundred in cash.

Remember that you cannot take cuban cigars into or through the usa.

    Have a great time!

  5. bring your card and cash its better to be prepared. Also some places might not take your card, hope i helped.

  6. You could either spend a little bit on cruises, or a lot. Typically, I don't buy a lot while on a cruise. Maybe postcards or keychains, or a tshirt, little things like that. I cruise as a family of 4, and we spend no more than $150 total, just on things onboard the ship and at the ports. Our excursions are all already paid for so we don't have to worry about that. tipping is nice to pay in cash so you know that it will go directly to whoever you're giving it to lol. Norwegian cruise lines does it automatically to your account, and the majority of the other cruises lines are set up like this. $3.50 per person per day for the person who takes care of your room, $3.50 per person per day for the waitor, $2 per person per day for the assistant waitor, and $0.75 per person per day for the Maitre'D. It's a lot eaiser if you pay all of the tips in cash. Now you don't have to bring your credit/debit card, but it does make it a ton easier. Whatever you spend onboard (drinks,in shops, etc.) could be added to your seapass card. In order to pay for everything that's on your seapass card you will need to either have that much cash with you, or pay for it all with your credit/cebit card. I suggest bringing a card with you so that you don't have to pay for everything in cash.

Hope this helps & have fun!!!
