My understanding was that anything under $10K was fine, anymore than that had to be declared but was still allowable.

it's the same as coming into the US from another country

No, there is no limit, but anything over $10,000 must be declared. It is not an offense to carry it, but it is an offense not to declare it.

BTW. That includes cash or any other negotiable instruments - cheques, bonds etc.
