Question:

How much cash would you normally carry with you ?

Hi, Folks,

I ask because a friend of mine is unfortunately a "Property Developer" of sorts, and always has at least £1000 in notes about him.

He is showing off perhaps.

I personally have about £20 in the wallet, enough for a beer & a lunch in places that don't have a card machine.

All else is plastic now, (and am not in any debt).

I like cash, it confuses the VAT man, and in some remote areas of the world is the only recognised method of dealing.

But walking around with wads of bank-notes cannot be wise here.

Any notions ?

Bob

  1. Who is the smartest? You get your pocket picked you lose 20 quid, he gets his picked he loses a grand!

BUT there are actually lots of jobs/businesses'  where you may need quite a substantial amount of cash with you.

  2. come on. I don't think any body takes a specific amount of money in his wallet, it depends where do you live, where are you going, which day etc.

honestly I don't take too much, the less the better,if you take alot believe me you'll burn them for nothing

  3. It is dependant on what you are doing and where are you that day.

If you are in a big city £20 would be more than enough as most of expenses could be charged to a card. But I have lived weeks without having a penny in my wallet.

  4. On average around £200

  5. Whenever I go to the cashpoint I get out £200 and I top this up whenever I get down to my last £30, or if I know I'm going to need some more...

  6. No need 2 ask mate ... I would carry no more than at least 30 dollars in my pocket ( convert peso - dollar currency P42-$1 ) coz there is no need to bring a lot of money if ur only going to show off... Now there are a lot of ATM loitering in ur country ... I'm sure. When u need money withdraw, that does not hurt... now if its the vat issue were talking about, are you willing to gamble all you money in the streets (example only) rather than 2 lose it becoz of vat? vat helps country to emerge and help one another, there is nothing (almost) bad about it, coz its all paying you off, upgrades in streets, lives, home, country and country's development. Well this reaction only came from my own opinion and my observation.

  7. When I travel for business I usually have $100 USD in my wallet.  On a day to day basis I have 20-40 USD.  I agree with you, I keep enough for some food and drink, or catching a cab.  Credit cards can be used for larger purchases.

Also flashing too much cash tends to attract the wrong element, whether it criminals or golddiggers.

  8. I`m the same as you Bob, only about £20 and my plastic, I`m not in debt either. I won`t carry much cash, the less I`vie got, the less to be mugged of.

  9. I usually have anything from €0 - €200 in my wallet. I dont like to carry too much at once.

  10. On average between $75-$150. Looks like your friend is showing off.

  11. It depends on what I am doing that day. Sometimes I have next to nothing, others a bit more. I don't use plastic now, got bitten by that one!

I have seen at times carrying a lot of cash, but only in exceptional circumstances where it is unavoidable and for as little time as I can. But carrying round wads of cash like that regularly? I would either think showing off or dodgy. In either case, definitely brave!

  12. I would normally have around 40-50 quid and my plastic. No need for anymore as you are probably only 5 mins from a cash machine.
