...week? Americans bathe/shower more often than any other nation; many of them wash every single day. This is completely unnecessary and quite wasteful of water. Even the most active lifestyles have one day a week when washing could be deferred. And, the dermatological fact is that washing every single day isn't good for your skin. So, how much water could be saved if Americans refrained from washing themselves a single day each week?

  1. It might be bad for your skin to bathe daily but I am not trying to smell my co-wokers pits without a day of washing. No thanks.

  2. If I skipped showering one day I would take a longer shower the next day.  I know that I would suds up twice because I would feel grubby from not showering the day before. So the amount of water saved would be negligible.

  3. I have no water shortage where I live. I think a shower a day is necessary and some people need 2

  4. Why stop at one showerless day a week. Think of all the water we could save by stopping showering.

  5. I shower every other day unless I just feel the need.  I usually take them every day when I'm sick.

  6. It's good that you are concerned with water waste and quality of available water...more people should be. The fact that Americans bathe too often does not waste water, nor does it weaken the quality of the water available. We have better water quality than almost every nation in the world, the fact that we take steps to preserve it is the reason.

Whether it is emptied into a septic tank, or taken out via sewer, the water never ends. Water from a septic tank is leeched out into the soil, where it is filtered through the soil and rock and becomes part of the groundwater table. That is the water pulled up from wells, it is the water that flows into lakes and ponds and reservoirs and is used by cities as water supplies. NATURE CLEANS ITSELF. Soap and shampoo are biodegradeable - this process takes place over time as the water filters. Sewer water goes to treatment plants and over time is made potable again. Whether it is by filtering or by the process of condensation and rain, the water comes back clean and safe.

I don't believe that NOT bathing would help our environment - people would use more cologne to mask perspiration stench, and people would use more soap, etc when they did shower as they would be dirtier and need more to accomplish the goal of being clean.

  7. Don't leave out lawn watering. Some people are OBSESSED with "the perfect lawn" even though they know it's gonna dry up and turn brown by fall. It's grass for crying out loud. How about car washes ? Personally, I couldn't care less if my car's exterior was clean or not, as long as it starts, I'm good. I can see after a big snowstorm wanting to rinse the salt off, but some people just can't bear the thought of their precious guzzler not being all pretty and shiny. Sad.  One guy up the street from me also insists on hosing down his driveway and sidewalk ! Unfortunately, people won't realize how important something as simple as water is until it's gone and they're paying 2, 3, or more dollars a gallon at the supermarket for it. I laugh my *** off every time I go to the gas station and fill my little Jeep. I drive off $40 poorer while the idiot at the next pump, with a vehicle the size of a garage is still pumping away at a $ 100 + hit. Serves them right.

  8. A lot of water, but where would it go?

We produce water so we can bathe with it and drink it, etc.

The problem isn't our waste of water, it's the fact that we depend too much on existing aquifers, etc. instead of spreading globally sustainable desalination and water purification methods.

Saving water in Florida will not help Ethiopians drink cleaner water, unless you want to burn millions of gallons of petroleum to ship the water over there.

Real efforts need to be made to develop sustainable energy, water, and food in impoverished or developing areas.

  9. Americans can bathe/shower one or two, three times a day. if i stay in bath three hours, my skin will be dry without oil, moisture in the bathtub. depend on individual who prefer to take bath/shower one day or three days.  The waters is not wasteful . There two large waterfalls on the border between Canada and the U.S. continue flow and recycle new fresh water. It called Niagara Falls.
