How much current can a 240Volt line pull with 2 attached 20 amp breakers on the line.?

"I have a 240 Volt circuit to power my well pump. The junction box has 2 attached 20amp breakers. How much current can I pull down this circuit. 20 amps or 40 amps"

  1. Basically you have 2 hot legs, 20Amps on each leg.

    The legs are out of phase so as one leg goes up the other goes down (AC=Alternating Current), total current will not go over 20A


  2. a 20 amp only handles up  to 20  amp
