It wasn't an explicit claim, but in his book The Art of Expressing the Human Body there was a chapter in which he discussed his circuit training routine.  He explained that a typical circuit should be made up of one set of exercises for each of the major muscle groups, rather than performing three, four, or five sets in the traditional weight training fashion.  The way that one would determine his or her weight load then is by taking a single maximum lift and halving it.  His example was: for bench press, being able to lift 400 pounds for one repitition, in a circuit the weightlifter should lift 200 pounds for as many repitions as possible.

    Albeit, if I remember correctly, he did not say that 400 pounds was his maximum lift.  But it would not surprise me.  He was an extremely strong man, and 400 pounds would be in the vicinity of the world record for his weight class--though below it.  This seems reasonable to me considering his fitness--and the fact that it is not impossible.
