  1. It is many years ago since I last read this novel.

    To my recollection, due to the Communist approach that "All animals are equal" initially all animals began to learn to read.

    However, as the Pigs managed to stamp authority upon the group and the farm, they took on more human appearances and traits. And it is the pigs who continue to learn to read.

    They also continue to take over through terror and threats and become masters of the other beasts. They also stand on their back legs and mimic humans, feasting and banqueting whilst the others did the work.

    One of Orwells best!
