  1. I'm not really sure how far back to go, but in 1919, gasoline cost 25 cents per gallon.

    That's equivalent to $3.42 today.

In 1940, the average price was just 18 cents per gallon, or the equivalent of $2.66 today. The lower price was probably due to a combination of reduced demand during the Depression, and more efficient drilling and refining procedures.

  2. I'm not old enough to remember the early days of the automobile, but I recall reading somewhere that gasoline was a nickel a gallon early on. I started driving in 1963, and Esso gas was 17 cents for regular, 19 cents for mid grade, and 21 cents for high test. That's a fact !

  3. My grandmother said it cost about 10cents per gallon!

  4. Well, less than 16cents. probably 10 cents a gallon.

  5. 27 Cents a gallon in 1949 = to $1.64 today

16 cents in 1920 in our local paper in microfilm, BUT the big problem was finding a gas station.

The AAA book from 1920 for Ohio lists every gas station along commonly travled routes ie Cleveland to Pittsburgh or Columbus.
