How much did it cost you to replace your Subaru Foresters rear drum breaks?

And where did you have it done? Anyone do it yourself? If so how much were all the parts, including the springs and everything?

Is it better to go somewhere or let your husband do it himself?

Thanks!

  1. Hubby can purchase shoes and rear brake hardware for 40 dollars but keep in mind that once he has the drums off, he will need to take them somewhere to have them machined. I can only speak for my shop, to replace the brake shoes with top of the line Bendix shoes, hardware, turning drums, cleaning and lubing backing plate, adjusting new brakes book time is probably 1.5 hours @ 100.00 / hour plus parts. So figure around 200 dollars for both sides, lifetime warranty on bendix shoes. There is no doubt other shops can do it cheaper because they use cheaper parts and so forth. So dont get me wrong, you can probably find some hillbilly shop with no warranty to do it for 125 dollars. Also stay away from shops that advertise all four wheels for 99.99. If you dont believe me, go to rip off report dot com and look up just brakes, brakes plus etc...Once you approve the 99 dollar brake job, they start on it and halfway through call you out to the shop to say your wheel cylinders need replacing, brakes need flushed etc... so the 99.99 went up to 500.00
