  1. 1970 is a touch before my time. How about 1974?

A 12 inch vinyl record album was $4 - $5. 8 track tapes were a little less, and cassettes weren't generally available yet. CDs were still 20 years away.

I paid $175 for my first car (a 1965 Plymouth Fury). A nice new car was about $4000.

Gas was 62 cents a gallon. (In 1970, it was 25 cents a gallon).

It cost 10 cents to mail a letter (just went up from 8 cents).

Candy bars and sodas were 25 cents each out of the vending machine.

A small 3 bedroom house in a so-so neighborhood in my hometown was about $28000.

My first hand held calculator was a Texas Instruments SR-10. It did the four basic operations, percent and square root. It cost me $85 in early 1974. (I believe that 1974 was the last year that you had to learn how to use a slide rule in high school).
