How much did your delivery cost with medical insurance?

My co-pay is $450 a day and I was wondering if this is normal? My insurance seems to be good up until this point. I paid $30 my first apt and nothing until the delivery. But I am curious to see if this co-pay is normal. Thanks!

  1. That copay seems high to me... I think with our plans at work, the highest inpatient daily copay is $150.  Hopefully, you're getting a bigger break on your insurance premiums.

Regardless, stay in the hospital for your deliver as long as you feel you need to - I'm sure your insurance has a limit (usually 48 hour stay for vaginal delivery & 96 hours for C-section), so you'll want to know that limit ahead of time.

Another couple things to keep in mind with insurance are your deductible and your out-of-pocket maximum costs.  When I had Zachary, my deductible was $1000 and the out of pocket max was $3000.  I'm glad the cap was $3000, since the C-section with minor complications was about $28,000!

If you're really worried about the costs (which is a perfectly legitimate concern), talk to the finance folks at the hospital where you will be delivering... get set up on a payment plan ahead of time, if possible.

Also, you'll want to contact your insurance company and find out how long you have after delivery to get your baby on your plan.  Most of the time, you have 30 days to contact your insurance company to get your baby officially on your plan.  Depending on the laws in your state (if USA), the company is probably obligated to cover your baby for at least those first 30 days.

    Good luck to you!

  2. Insurance is so different from policy to policy and state to state.  I live in MA and have BC/BS.  Our co-pay for delivery is $250 flat.  We did not pay any co-pays for any doctor appointments.

Goodl uck and best wishes for a happy & healthy pregnancy.

  3. I actually have my delivery bill right in front of me from my first son.   The total was $11, 763.62 , I had to pay $365.79.  I don't think your ins. is 450 a day???  Maybe its a $450 copay for being admitted into the hospital.  I would contact your ins. company to make sure that is what you are responsible for.  Good Luck!

  4. My out of pocket to my Dr was about $800. I made payments starting at my 1st apt. And the hospital bills were about $500 for everything. Epidural, anostigioligist, 3 day stay, nursery for baby... After everything my year to date out of pocket has been met so for the rest of the year if I go to the Dr or anything I have no co-pay or anything!
