I live in San Diego in a neighborhood called Bay Park, with a 180-degree view overlooking Mission Bay, Sea World, Point Loma, part of San Diego Bay, Coronado Island, the beaches (Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach), and the ocean beyond. I bought the house in 2003 for $625K. It was built in 1946 and had been cosmetically remodeled. In 2006, I cashed in some stock options and spent about $300K rebuilding the house, adding on about 500 square feet to bring it up to 2BR, 2-1/2 BA with a den at about 1750 square feet.

It appraised for just under $1 million in 2006, after the construction. It currently has an appraised value of about $875K and I owe about $750K on it (maxxed out the debt in my primary home instead of a rental property for tax purposes).
