How much difference in cost will there be between private and NHS?

I've just had an estimate from a private dentist of £650 for a crown, a root canal filling and 3 small holes filled. I have found an NHS dentist who will take me, who has NO waiting list!!

Will the NHS dentist be cheaper than the private??

  1. yes.. nhs is really cheaper than private.

  2. This is quite a budget estimate from even a private dentist I would think in the UK, and I would honestly take it as a bad sign that you have found an NHS dentist with no waiting list, as the few remaining NHS dentists in the UK are pretty over subscribed and if they are any good do not want to take on new patients. Even NHS dentists now charge a sliding scale for things like crowns or bridges or anything that is deemed not immediately medically necessary, although the basic NHS treatment is cheaper than private only some people qualify for free treatment, e.g. if you are on benefits.  If you are in work it will still be cheaper than going private.  Really though if you are having doubts, I would check them both out for the cheaper basic treatments, like an examination or scale and polish and use your instincts about which one you trust the most.

  3. Yes, NHS dentist is cheaper, go to him especially since he has no waiting list.

  4. OMG! an NHS dentist with no waiting list, so they do exist!

The NHS will be cheaper as some of the procedures may be free, not sure about crowns, I think only a certain type are free.

  5. You're kidding!!!! No waiting list, get yourself to him pronto!!!!

No waiting list, no fee (apart from crowns I think), no question.

  6. The maximum cost for treatment on the NHS is £198. You do need to be aware though, that NHS dentists may not do treatment such as root canals or crowns. Because they are so pushed for time and resources, they will often go for the quickest option which is to pull the tooth, and if there's a chance of the tooth being saved, you don't want to have it out. Once a tooth has gone, it's gone, and it can mess up your bite and cause problems for you later in life.

By all means book an appointment with the NHS guy, which will cost you £16 or so. If he also does your fillings that will cost you £44 (I think). You can ask him then about the other stuff, but if he suggests pulling the teeth, go private if you can afford to.

  7. Yes the NHS one will be cheaper

  8. Max charge for NHS is £198 per course of treatment. It may well cost that, since there is a crown involved, but it is still heaps cheaper than private - I got a crown done private and that alone was £200.

If the NHS dentist assesses the crown as necessary, then it will be part of the treatment, but if they assess it as cosmetic, then you would likely have to get that done private. NHS does do crowns, but only if needed - I got one done on NHS due to my tooth breaking off and was completely unrepairable. Only option was a crown.

  9. NHS is cheaper, but it will hurt more...
