Question:

How much difference will a really great tri-bike make in an Ironman?

1 mph? 2 mph? 5 mph?

I have been riding a 20 or 30 year old Giant with a rolled steel frame, whole bike weighs probably 2 to 3 times what the new bikes do. Not good aerodynamics at all, full spokes on the wheelsets. But how much time can I really expect a new bike to knock off my race? I usually ride 15 to 17mph averages over long rides. Will a great tri-bike get me up to 20mph averages for rides over 50 miles? Experienced triathletes and cyclists only, please!

  1. hey mate

Their is a huge difference between a 20 or 30yr old Giant and a new top of the line TT Giant.

Not only are the new bikes far more aerodynamic, they will also set your body in a more aerodynamic position, the wheels are aero (zipp 404)

Not only that but the frame is stiffer and the gears will change smoother. Their is also more gears to choose from so you can pedal at the best cadence all the time.

I'd expect you could take your average from 15 to 17mph to 19-21mph.

50miles will feel more like 40 or 45miles too.

Their will definately be a large noticeable improvement.

    good luck with your cycling

  2. Depends if you are cruising or actually doing a race. But it will definitely increase your average. But remember it's the rider who generally makes the biggest difference, not the bike.

  3. I would say a 3 mph increase is reasonable with the right bike and clipless pedals.
