  1. I've spent time a good amount of time in Hanover and a little in Stuttgart, Germany, and it is closer to American living than you might think.

It is fairly northern in terms of Europe and in Germany so they have a relatively high standard of living, and a decent amount of ex-pats.  They have several of the same chains, subway, mcdonals, bk, etc...Pretty countryside....and pretty much everyone under the age of 30 will speak English as their second language.

The big differences are just a bit of the european laid back attitude (although they are german so less so than about everywhere else on the continent).  One of the german mottos is "work to live," not "live to work" like in america...so people take a lot more vacations.

    Good luck.

  2. I like Stuttgart - I live here at the moment.  Great location, international airport, Switzerland and France within a couple of hours drive, Bavaria (Germany's vacation spot) just a few hours and tons to see, do, and learn.  Is your Dad military?  If not, there are great schools from the grammar to University and history galore.  Italy is not far either.  In any case, if he takes it, you can have a great time.  The people are friendly enough and there are events enough to entertain you any time of year.  Enjoy.  Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

  3. Located South Germany in the state Baden Wuerttemberg. It is nice there, so much green, nice buildings, friendly people, they speak German but with dialect, good food, nice stores, restaurants, cafes. Not far from Munich.
