The average person probably knows nothing. Personally, I am currently reading the book "Creation" by Gore Vidal, which is a historical fiction about Persia at the time of Darius -- it's really expanding my knowledge about Persia. Prior to reading this book, I knew a bit about them in relation to the Greek Wars and the Parthians fighting Rome.

Also, that most historians cite the Median Empire of around 800  BC as the precursor to the Persian Empire, which would make their history about 2800 years not 4000.

Edit: Ok, I will correct this and say that the Iranians or Aryans arrived in Present day Iran in the second Millineum BC and go with 4000 years. The previous people there the, Elamites were not Aryan.

They were some of the earliest and most advanced civilizations of their time.

Although powerful and possessing great political and military strength, natural climatic changes altered their fortunes starting around 6000 BC.

Pride brought them to war with the Greeks after the Ionian revolt leading the the battles of Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis, which pushed the Persians back.

The rise of Alexander of Macedonia (the great) was really the end of the Persian empires and the rise of the Greek and eventuality Roman empires.

Nothing.  They're too absorbed with their 200+ years of American history to even fathom 4,000+ years of Persian history which represents the cradle of civilization.

I know they do not have much time left on earth if they continue on their current path

I know they have a very long history of human rights violations and are the worlds leader in state sponsered terrorism

I also know they have a leader that thinks the holocaust was a conspiracy to steal arab land.

I know they were not afraid of Carter but changed their tune quickly once Reagan took office
