  1. Monthly expenses:

    - Rent + utilities for a room in shared apartment:

    300 € (outside Paris) to 600 € (in Paris)

    - Transportation: 50 €

    - Food & hygiene products: 250 €

    - Cell phone OR DSL/TV/phone combo: 30 €

    Yearly expenses:

    - Taxe d'habitation: approx. 180 €

    - Tuition: free

    - College administrative fee: approx. 200 € (depends on degree level, but no more than 500 €)

    - Books & educational material: 400 €

    - Health insurance: 180 €

    - Insurance for apartment (compulsory): I don't know but very little if you are sharing with roommates.

    - basic furniture and room equipment: 300 €

Which amounts to 9,000 € to 12,500 € a year for your basic needs.

    Additional non-basic expenses:

    - 100 € / month for leisure;

    - a few trips in France (both transportation and accomodation are much cheaper in France than in the US)

    - maybe an air ticket to your home country

    - shopping for clothes

As a student you will get discounts on a lot of services, especially if you buy the international student card: http://www.isic.tm.fr/

People under 25 or 26 get discounted fares on train & plane travel too.

  2. In Germany it is 7000-8000 EUR per year. France should be similar, Paris significantly more expensive.
