Question:

How much $ do I need?

I am leaving on a trip to Paris, and I will be there for 8 nights and 9 days. I am planning on spending roughly $2000 while there. Only $300 of that is for my hotel budget (got a SWEET deal).

My bank says I can use my debit card for transactions there, and that I will get a better exchange rate by using the card at ATMs and such instead of using a money change service.

Questions:

Will the ATM fees negate any money I would save on exchage rate? What fees are involved?

How much actual cash should I bring to have ready money on hand?

  1. u could spend less if your book with www.ytbtravel.com/yonne41. but its just a suggestion.

  2. never take more in cash than you feel like you could afford to lose to a pickpocket. there are lots of exchange places there, and travelers checks are accepted  also...i wouldn't suggest any atm's to use for the thought of the atm keeping it, then your out of luck until the next business day.

  3. I have traveled to Europe 5 times from the U.S.  I have always used my ATM card and never had a problem. DO NOT take traveler's checks!!! You will get ripped off on the exchange rate.  The fees that you will be charged are a little tricky to figure out.  I would count on a $5 fee per withdrawal.  You also need to pay attention to the type of ATM you are using. Sometimes they are not compatible with your card, so they will spit your card back out at you.

You do need to be very careful of pickpockets in Europe.  It is probably the biggest problem in terms of crime.  They just want your money, most do not want to hurt you. I suggest that no one in your group take a purse to Europe! Having a purse makes you a target, even if you hold on to it tightly.

I highly suggest you purchase a money belt before you go.  Do not buy the kind that goes around your neck. Pickpockets know to look for these.  A money belt that goes around your waist under your clothes is your best form of protection.  I have taken one with me every time I have gone to Europe. Guys can carry their wallets, but it would be good to have a chain or put it in their front pocket.  Never go to the ATM by yourself.  Always watch what is going on around you.  $1700 should be enough money for the time you are there, depending on what your plans are.  Have a great time, Paris is awesome!
