How much do I need to have?!

Ok, so Im saving up money to buy a pet. I dont know what kind of pet yet, so I cant say. But how much money should I save to have enough money for like most animals? I only have $31 right now haha.

Well, honestly?

If it's going to be a more expensive pet such as..dog, cat, ferret, iguana, parrot, sugar glider...maybe around $600.

For a smaller pet such as...rats ($200), guinea pigs ($200), hamster ($100), frogs ($80), fish ($100), mice ($50), turtle ($150), rabbit ($200), parakeet or other small bird ($200)etc...Keep in mind this is if you buy everything new. Consider adopting a pet, many times cage, food, and bedding will be supplied with the adoption. Try looking on craigslist.com or kijiji.com. A lot of people who are desperate to get ride of healthy, loving pets post ads on there selling their affectionate pets for very little to no cost.

Most times you can get a rabbit, cage, food, and all accessories for $20 from someone who is really desperate to find a new home for their pet. Really...consider it because you'll save a lot of money and you'll also sorta be rescuing the pet. A lot of times even baby animals are posted for little cost...it's great, I love that site, and I love knowing that I gave an animal who needed a good home a good home (most of those animals will wind up at a shelter anyway if the owner can't find a home for them).

Check your newspapers.. people are always giving away animals. That way you dont have to pay to buy.

You'll just need enough money to buy food and supplies for it.

Well, you really need to create a goal for yourself and determine what kind of pet you want (and can properly provide for) before saving the money.  You need to not only save enough money to buy a pet, but also enough money for all of the things that go with the pet.

And there's no way to give you an estimate of how much this will cost without having any idea what you want.  I mean you can buy a feeder goldfish for a pet for 30 cents - but a proper tank & filter set up with all the accessories for it will cost way more than that (over a hundred dollars).

Dogs can run anywhere from under a hundred (if you adopt from a rescue shelter) to thousands of dollars for many purebreds.  Of course, they need annual vaccinations, regular feeding, possible grooming, bowls, leash, collar, bed, etc., so the initial cost of the dog is only part of it.

Figure out the animal first, then research proper care of that animal.  Talk to others with the same pet and see what it cost them up front as well as what it costs on an ongoing basis.

how bout looking for someone who home breeds or just is looking for a home for one of their baby pets?

There are a number of factors to base your decision on what type of pet.

1. Your budget

    If you are thinking about a dog or cat they can cost a lot when it comes to food, some cats can be selective of the food that they eat, and dogs can eat a whole heap of food.

2. What you are interested in

   Its no use to get a fish if you are looking for interaction and something that you can cuddle.  You have to think what you want to get out of your pet, ie companionship or are you just happy to watch them.

The ASPCA says that it will cost an average of a hamster/gerbil is $340 the first year ($40 for the cage) and $300 per year after that.  That does not include the cost of the animal itself or any visits to the exotics vet (exotics vets are very expensive!).

for hamsters to buy everything you need at first about 60 dollars including the cage and the hamster which are the most expensive things and also including food and everything otherwise food is like 3-5bucks and will last 2-3 months!

a reptile of any kind is going to be a couple hundred and a dog and cat the about 5 hundred at least
